The reason you need a filter when using a bulk tank is the propane leaches the plasticizers from the from the hose connecting the tank to the appliance. I have a 12 foot hose I use to run our grill and even after 8 years of use it still leaches oil and plugs up the regulator. All is explained in the links below.
